What is RT-PCR Test?

  • Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)
  • Tests the genetic material (nucleic acid) of SARS-Cov-2
  • A sample is collected from upper or lower respiratory areas, like a nasal swab or throat swab

When do You Need an RT-PCR Test for Sars-Cov-2?

  • If you have any of the COVID symptoms (cough, fever, breathing problems, fatigue)
  • You are travelling and need a confirmatory test
  • Your doctor suspects you have COVID (you had a possible exposure and some suggestive symptoms) and advises this test

What as a Swab Test?

A swab test is used to determine if you have an active coronavirus infection. A 6-inch specialized swab is inserted into the nose and/or throat to collect the sample needed to determine an active infection. Once enough samples are collected, the sample will be stored in a sterile container and sent to a lab for further testing.

Where can I get Tested for RT-PCR in Bangalore?

Government and Private Facilities

Although many medical institutions and clinics provide COVID-19 screening, swab tests are not available everywhere, and are not always accessible to the public. You may opt for screening at government hospitals and health clinics near you or at private hospitals and clinics listed on the DoH website. Typically, screenings conducted in these facilities are cheaper but require long waiting times, and are often crowded.

What is the Difference between RT-PCR and Antigen (RTK-Ag) Testing?

Polymerase Chain Reaction Test (PCR)

PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction and is a method of examining the virus by detecting viral DNA. Compared to the Antigen Rapid Test Kit (RTK-Ag), the PCR examination is more accurate. This method is also recognized by the Ministry of Health (MoH) as the gold standard for COVID-19 diagnostic tests. However, this accuracy comes with a more complex process and higher equipment prices. In comparison, the PCR test also requires a much lengthier time to receive the results. This method also only determines if you have an active coronavirus infection and cannot determine if you have had the virus in the past.

Antigen Rapid Test Kit (RTK-Ag)

The Antigen Rapid Test Kit (RTK-Ag) is also a common method used in India to determine if you have contracted the virus. This method detects viral protein related to the coronavirus to determine a reactive or non-reactive result. As the name suggests, the rapid test is a faster method of detecting the virus in the body and can take as quickly as 15 minutes to acquire the results. Typically, the rapid test only requires a swab sample from the nose to yield results of reactive or non-reactive.

Safe at Home

Rather than breaking self-quarantine and possibly endangering yourself and others, our home sample collection of COVID-19 samples gives you a much safer option for getting tested with added peace of mind. Once a sample has been collected and depending on the test you have chosen, you will either receive your PCR test results within 24-72 hours after testing or 15 minutes after your RTK-Antigen test.

Convenience and Time

Home Sample Collection for COVID test will not only save you a trip to the hospital and potentially expose yourself to the virus but you will also save time as opposed to walk-in or drive-thru appointments.

Hospitals and Government COVID testing facilities might be catering to a larger number of walk-in patients daily in order to meet the demand for testing. This could mean longer queues for both in-person and drive-thru screening. It may take several hours of your day to complete the testing procedure.

In order to mitigate risk and in the interest of saving time, a home sample collection for COVID with add-on Scans and Labs would be the best option to get tested for the virus.

Other In-Home Screening Facilities

You can also opt for COVID testing with our other health facilities:

  • Tele Consultation with Physician
  • Remote COVID Care
  • COVID Diabetic monitoring

If You have Tested Positive for COVID-19

If you have been tested positive for COVID-19, the Ministry of Health and the partner clinics will be notified. It is important to make note of all those that have come in contact with you in the last 7 days as they should also get tested for COVID-19. For your safety and the safety of others, remain in self-isolation and monitor yourself for any COVID-19 symptoms (if you are asymptomatic). While isolating in a single room at home, ensure the space is well-ventilated with open windows.

Avoid sharing the same room with occupants and sharing the same bathroom. If you must leave your room at any time, always wear a mask and maintain a 2-meter distance from others. If necessary, the District Health Office (DHO) or PKD will contact you for further isolation in a COVID-19 hospital.
