What is Chorionic Villus sampling (CVS)?
-CVS is a prenatal procedure to examine the placenta tissue (specifically, the chorionic villi).
– CVS procedure helps identify certain chromosomal conditions as well as genetic disorders.

CVS is usually done between 10th and 14th week of pregnancy.
– CVS is recommended during pregnancy with an increased risk of having a baby with chromosomal abnormalities and genetic conditions.
– It can provide early and accurate information about potential genetic abnormalities in the baby, allowing parents to make informed decisions
-CVS carries a risk of miscarriage, 1 in 1000 procedures, which is very low compared to other invasive medical procedures.
 
-Your healthcare provider will discuss the specific risks and benefits with you based on your situation during counseling.
– Before the procedure, you may be advised to avoid strenuous activities and sexual intercourse for a few days.
– It is essential to inform your healthcare provider about any allergies or medical conditions you have.
a) The procedure is done under Ultrasound guidance by inserting a thin long needle through the mother’s lower abdominal wall into the Uterus. The procedure is done under local anesthesia to numb the area over the skin surface.
b) A small sample of placental tissue (chorionic villi) is collected.
c) The procedure usually takes about 10-20 minutes.
d) During the procedure, you may feel some pressure or discomfort, similar to menstrual cramps
a) You will be advised to rest for the day and avoid strenuous activities.

c) Contact your healthcare provider if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, or unusual symptoms (as explained by your healthcare provider)
d) The collected tissue sample will be sent to a genetics laboratory for analysis.
e) You will get the test reports within two to three weeks (depending on the genetic test requested).
f) Your Doctor will discuss the results with you and provide further guidance and support.
