Asthma – Why Should You Take Care Of Your Lungs?

In recognition of World Asthma Day which takes place this week, Dr. Gangi Reddy (Pulmonologist) tells us about how the lungs are the most  important organ for humans

Make sure to schedule an appointment for a flu vaccination and a COVID-19 booster dosage if you have chronic asthma.

One of a pair of organs in the chest that transports oxygen throughout the body and eliminates carbon dioxide.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects the airways in the lungs, causing them to become narrow and inflamed. This can result in symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Asthma affected an estimated 262 million people in 2019 (1) and caused 455 000 deaths worldwide, and it is one of the most common chronic diseases among children.

We carried out a study regarding the prevalent stigmas associated with asthma as part of this year’s Asthma Week. This study confirmed the stigmatisation that persons with asthma experience, especially at work and when taking their prescriptions in public.

Lung function

The primary function of the lungs is respiration, which is a process of gas exchange (or breathing). During respiration, oxygen from the incoming air enters the blood and carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, exits. Decreased lung function describes a decreased ability of the lungs to exchange gases.

The lungs are two spongy, air-filled organs that are located on either side of the chest (thorax). The bronchi, which are tubular branches of the trachea (windpipe), transport inhaled air into the lungs. The bronchi is then divided into bronchioles, which are ultimately small branches.

Asthma can be triggered by a variety of factors, including environmental allergens (such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander), air pollution, exercise, stress, and respiratory infections. Treatment typically involves the use of inhaled medications to reduce inflammation and open up the airways, as well as the identification and avoidance of triggers.

Asthma can be managed effectively with the right treatment and lifestyle changes. It is important for individuals with asthma to work closely with their healthcare provider to develop a personalised treatment plan and to monitor their symptoms closely. Additionally, asthma education programs can help individuals learn how to manage their condition and reduce the risk of complications.
